If you're looking for a trail that combines adventure, imposing cliffs, and a good dose of adrenaline, then we need to talk about the Cliffs of Maceira Trail. This route might as well be called "in the mountains with the scent of the sea," but the official name already says it all about its essence.
However, for trail enthusiasts, this name may sound familiar. After all, this one is known as the "toughest trail in the West".
But wait! We don’t need to compete with trail runners. Because our proposal is different: to go slowly, absorb the energy of the landscape, and enjoy every step.
If you're looking for a reason to explore the West Coast of Portugal, this is the nudge you needed.
What makes this Hike so special?
Located just 30 minutes from Torres Vedras, the Maceira Cliffs Trail offers the best of both worlds: the mountains and the sea. In other words, it’s no exaggeration to say that this trail is a true ode to the natural diversity of the Oeste region.
Thus, we begin at the enchanting Santa Rita Beach, a place that on its own already deserves a spot in your travel album. From here, the hike continues for approximately 12 kilometers, filled with landscapes that vary between:
- Green pastures that seem to be taken straight out of a postcard;
- Fabulous limestone cliffs that rise like guardians of the coast;
- The Vimeiro Hot Springs, a place with history and charm;
- And the mysterious Lapa Cave, which adds a touch of magic to the adventure.
Although this trail has some more challenging sections, the reward is immense. The 360º views, the sound of the waves breaking in the distance, and the scent of wild vegetation make every effort worthwhile.
Moreover, the combination of terrains – sometimes flat, sometimes steep – is perfect for those who want to test their limits without losing the pleasure of a good hike.
Torres Vedras: Much more than a starting point
If you still need one more reason to join this adventure, here it is: the Maceira Cliffs are just 30 minutes from Torres Vedras, which is famous for its Carnival – one of the most vibrant in Portugal!
This year, the Torres Vedras Carnival starts on March 2, which means you can take advantage of the time to hike the trail the day before and, the next day, dive into the festivities and carnival traditions that make this city unique. Check here where to stay in Torres Vedras
